It will be the first and only stand alone modem for MAXX speeds offered for rental. Then I learned (from management - not a CSR) right after I bought my modem that they will be offering the one I bought for rental later this year (and two days after that Charter told the FCC they will not charge a modem rental fee if the merger goes through).

So to me, the real questions here are does your ISP charge a rental fee? Does your ISP offer for rent the modem you want? Then there is the question: do you feel ok using a hybrid modem/router that your ISP gave you? My ISP gives out ONLY hybrids if you are getting MAXX speeds.

After what has happened with two other ISPs, I wouldn't ever rent a hybrid even if I turned off the router and used my own router. I would have kept the Surfboard 6143 that I was renting from my ISP except it cannot do MAXX speeds so I was faced with buy my own (very expensive - but eventually break even after 14 months with no rental fee) or rent the one hybrid the ISP is giving out for MAXX speeds. We found that ClearOS, pfSense, and Untangle could be appropriate for home use.

I should have waited for my ISP to offer it for rent and then later for free (thrown in as you say). We reviewed five products: ClearOS, DD-WRT, pfSense, Untangle and ZeroShell. My ISP is soon going to start offering the modem I bought as a rental and then when the merger with Charter goes through there will be NO modem rental fee so I made a bad decision to buy mine. You have to RENT the modem from them and the price keeps rising. But my ISP does not "throw in" any equipment although they did years ago. If you get something thrown in, would you keep it, or get rid of it.I would probably keep it and if I hated that particular modem then I would insist my ISP provide a different modem. Similarly RCA DCM 476 > Thomson DCM 476 > Technicolor DCM 476 In this case, even though the device was never manufactured or labeled as anything other than Alcatel, the database shows it as a Technicolor device. For exampleĪlcatel Speedtouch Home > Thomson Speedtouch Home > Technicolor Speedtouch Home There needs to be a cross reference for manufacturers, because of the constant acquisitions of product lines. So to that end, this site could end up being the homepage if we can get ranked high enough in the Google search results. Technicolor seems to be reinforcing this fact by making sure no Google search will send anyone to their webpage. One of the problems with some of the ISP provided or sanctioned CPE is that support is expected to be delivered from the ISP and not the manufacturer. I added the stuff I have, and discovered that Technicolor (who bought Thomson's modem line) has absolutely no mention of the DCM475 or 476 cable modems on their website.
